The old Durant mirror was frozen in
place and had seen better days. For Christmas the 912 has a new Talbot
Junior mirror with a convex front surface mirror for wider visibility.
Intstallation had its share or challenges.

| The new version of Adobe
Acrobat 6.0 has the capability to show layers. This prompted me to
create a version of the 912 wiring
diagram that is saved as a PDF file with layers. The wiring diagram
was divided into layers according to major electrical subsystems such
as Turn Signals, Head Lights, Horn, etc. There are 14 layers in the
resulting PDF file.

I spent the week end in the North
Bay above the Golden Gate Bridge first at Sears Point and the CSRG races with John
and Petey Thornton and several other 912 owners. The Alfa shown is a
an aluminum bodied 1967 GTA that is doing the same lap times as John's
#902 and is great competition for the 912s.

On Sunday was a
concours at Ledson Winery. This is an
event that has often on my calendar, but it is over 2 hours away from
home in San Jose and I have never taken the time to make the trip.

including engine.

The 2003
German AutoFest in Ventura, California, was two day Porsche show that
takes place at the Ventura Seasside Park and was a gathering place for
over 25 912s. The show included a swap meet, cars for sale, and
industry booths.

The
Blackhawk PCA Zone 7 concours takes
place next to the Blackhawk Museum that has an extensive car
collection, classics, sports cars, U.S. and European. It is well worth
a stop if you are in the San Francisco east bay area. On this day the
concours had 2 912 entered by Lisa Fitz and George Vacero. Both came
away as prize winners.

John Thornton and I spent last
Sunday at the Monterey
Historics. Here are a few of the pictures from that outing - I took
over a 100. Most of the older cars are rendered in black and white
which seems to match the period better than color. |

Jesse Silverman from the bay area is off
to college. His summer project was to install a new front pan on his
912. Here are his pictures and description of the process.

My brother Rick Hillman was a
companion, a friend who was often mentioned on this site after taking
trips to various Porsche events with me. He passed to a better world
today after a battling liver disease for several years during his
liver transplant operation. Rick, we almost got you through another
close call. We really miss you, man.

The site has been off the Internet
since June 27 when my ISP closed it's doors but is now back, no longer
hosted at my house as before but at a web hosting facility. Hopefully
the reliability is better, but the ability to experiment with web
related tools is reduced. An example of that is that the search
facility used a language that is not supported by most hosting
companies. I'll have to rewrite it.
We are using a dial-up connection to the Internet until the new ADSL is
provisioned. The lack of broad band for this month really makes one
appreciative of what the Internet can provide with a fast connection.

Some time ago I bought a spare
engine and stripped the sheet metal off it with the intention of
having it powder coated. However the old engine was leaking oil bad
enough I decided it was time to do an engine swap which I did over the
week preceding the fourth of July.

A
page on my experience with replacing the seals on all my brake
calipers. You will need brake fluid, a seal kit for each caliper, an
air compressor, some rags and a 'C' clamp. Frozen pistons lead to
inefficient braking which was true in my case. I put in new brake pads
the next step softer than the original ones at the same time to get
more braking efficiency with less force.

Rick and I drove to McMinnville,
Oregon, to the annual campout at
Parts Obsolete, a gathering of
Porsches, People and Parts at one of the most interesting operations
on the West Coast. Great fun.

I got some 'lifetime' hood struts
today which we hope will last a couple of years. Two sets of older
ones would not hold up the hood. The installation trick is for the lower end of the drivers side, at least
for older cars.

Thunderhill. This is the first one of these we have seen up close.

Race weekend with
CSRG where we saw dueling 912 race cars,
Cary Dunn from Tennessee, and several 912 owners including Jerry
Hansen and his wife, Don Melchor and his wife, Jeff from Sacramento
and Lisa from Santa Cruz. Nice people, great fun. The support from the
912 community was gratifying.

We spent Saturday with John Thornton
and #902. Bled the brakes, installed the passenger seat, took some
more pictures and put on the race wheels and tires. The car is nearly
ready for the first CSRG races of the 2003
season March 28-30 at Sears Point.

How about a quick 30 minute tune up? If
everything is working correctly, you can check the idle, timing and
idle mixture pretty quickly.

Brian Mendel loaned me a
compression tester that I used to see if
the rings and valves are OK on my engine. They are satisfactory. This
is a simple test with the right equipment but not one that is needed
to be done very often.

Rick and I spend the day with John
Thornton and his 912 race car, #902
(Which is featured in the April 2003 issue of Excellence magazine). We
helped with the installation and test of a new fuel pump.

Some of the
Bay 912 group got together for breakfast
today. We had 11 912s plus the owners of three more. Very pleasant.

There is a new
page on wheels after some discussion on
Bay912 about Fuchs wheels and offsets. We are
still gathering data. Is there a third 6x15 part number?

About this time each year I change this web site. This year is no
different. The major change is the revamping of the main page
including a set of topics and recent updates to those topics shown on
the bottom of the page. The navigation panel is moved to bottom of
each page in order to allow for slightly bigger pictures.
