2003 Campout at Parts Obsolete
Parts Obsolete sponsors a campout each
year in early June on their 50 acre property outside McMinnville,
Oregon. This is an opportunity to visit a unique operation, see some
great cars, campout in a tent for the first time in 20 years, and take
the 912 on a moderate length trip. My brother Rick joined me for the
ride. We met face to face with several 912 owners that we had
corresponded with on one of the 912 Bulletin
Boards.
| My brother and I were born in McMinnville, so we had an additional
interest in going to the campout We packed the 912 and left Thursday
night, stopping in Dunnsmere, just north of Redding for the night.
|
| Gary Emory runs the parts department at Parts Obsolete. A couple of years ago they purchased a major Southern
California Salvage operation and trucked 23 semi trailer loads of
Porsche parts to Oregon. This was in addition to the parts from
earlier businesses including a collection of early Porsche Racing
spares.
|
| Rod Emery, Gary's son, runs the race car operation at
Parts Obsolete. They restore and build
race cars, often in outlaw form - with non-standard engines or body
work. But they are works of art.
|
| At the annual campout there were 390 people fed at the Saturday night
BBQ, many of whom camped out, sleeping on the ground, in tents or
something fancier.
|
| Old scrapped cars presented some picture opportunities.
|
| The display area had about 190 cars in it from new to old. Porsches,
VWs and replicas.
|
| Rick and I went to see the Spruce Goose at the McMinnville airport
