912 Expenses

This table shows expenses and cost of additions. I'm not including an item until the part is actually used or installed on the car. Most parts have been purchased from Gabe at Strasse who is great at chasing down mysteries.

Gasoline

Here is the gasoline and usage story. My expectation was to drive 12,000 miles/year. The first year was 9877 and the second 13013 for an average of 11,445. As you can tell from the expense summary, the first year was taken with getting the car sorted out. It spent many days waiting for the weekend to install new parts.

The third year varied wildly in our miles per day statistic because the car went out of service for some restoration work in June and most of July and again in November-December to repair some damage done by a rock and to repaint the hood, front fenders, bumper and passenger door.

The first tank of gas with my rebuilt engine was at 59744 miles on 12/30/04.

In the fourth year of ownership which started of with trips to Fresno, Willows, McMinnville, Oregon and Ventura. Even after missing a couple of weeks in July and not driving the 912 to the Rendezvous at Solvang, we have been putting on the miles at twice the rate of the previous couple of years.

The big event for the fifth year is the rebuilding of the old engine.

Year Total Miles Total Gal MPG Cost $/mile Miles/day Est Mi/yr Updated
 2000 9796 479 20.5 $1001 $0.102 27 9877 May 15
 2001 13084 595 22.0 $1132 $0.086 36 13013 May 17
 2002 8892 388 22.9 $793 $0.089 24 8892 May 17
 2003 13364 556 24.0 $1204 $0.090 36 13364 May 16
 2004 12200 543 22.5 $1348 $0.111 33 12233 May 15
 2005 9685 443 21.9 $1324 $0.137 27 9738 May 13

The following table represents a change to a calendar year based accounting. We had misserable weather, an exhaust leak and a vacation at the end of 2005. The last tank was purchased Nov 6 and the next February 11. Then one tank a month until May. Rain, rain, rain. This results in interesting errors in the estimated miles per year.

Expense Table

Note: It is obvious that I am not maintaining this list of expenses. At some point in time, most of us seem to be just throwing the invoices into a drawer. At least you can see what I spent money on for the first couple of years or so.

The prices here should be taken with a grain of salt. Inflationary pressures drive prices up. Over supply drives them down. Scarcity might make them increase. They do not include sales tax or shipping. We have 'inventory' of parts not used and not included in the list that will be added to the list as used and the price indicated will be the price paid at the time they were purchased. There is a note in 'Up-Fixin der Porsche Vol III' about replacement boots and clamps for the CV-joints at a cost of $4.00 written 3/71. We should have bought them then.

The types on the table represent an arbitrary classification:
  • A - Accessory, Book or Tool
  • C - Capital Expense or Upgrade
  • M - Maintenance, Parts
  • O - Operating Cost, Insurance, DMV
  • R - Restoration

I'm lumping insurance, oil, filters, tires and DMV as operating costs.

There seems to be a fine line between Maintenance and Repair. Some items are obvious such as the front pan restoration which is a repair. Replacing a worn out wheel bearing should be maintenance. The distinction should rest on whether the fix is permanent (or at least semi-permanent). A repair fixes damage from accident or age. Maintenance replaces worn parts. Some of the items in these two categories should be recategorized.

It is all rather arbitrary. Should the used jack be a tool (A) or a capital item since it is a replacement for an item delivered with the car (C)? On Mondays, it is a tool.
