The first 718 were track tested in 1957 and raced by the factory and customers until 1964. It had many class wins and outright victories at the Targa Florio and Sebring in 1960. The center seat configuration was done on the early ones and they were raced in Formula 2 where closed wheel cars were acceptable with enough success that they made some open wheel Formula 2 versions and campaigned them, winning at Rheims in 1958 driven by Jean Behra. The cars originally came in 1500 and 1600 cc versions. The last version was fitted with a 2 liter flat eight which was very successful. The chassis was developed into the RS60 and RS61 in 1960 and 1961. Well known drivers include Dan Gurney, Wolfgang von Trips and Jo Bonier.
