Cleaning the Brake Caliper

020615-1223.jpg

Here Dave is using a right angle pick to clean the groove in the caliper that will capture the seal. This seal is important. It provides a bit of resistance to the piston and causes the piston to retract into the caliper a bit when the hydraulic pressure is released. This prevents the pads from dragging on the rotors.

You can tell if the seals need replacing if there is drag on the rotors. Dragging brakes will cause the wheel to get much hotter than normal. Enough hotter that you can tell by feel after driving the car.
